Samuel Clemens took his pen name, Mark Train, from a cry usedby boatmen on the Mississippi River. "Mark Twain" refers to water that is two fathoms deep, or deep enough for safe travel. Growing up in the river town of Hannibal, Missouri, (his childhood home is now a museum) and working as an apprentice steamboat pilot on the Mighy River provided inspiration for some of Twain's literary masterpieces. The familiar character and scenes of the book are well handled and properly condensed in order to give dramatic point to the whole play. This refreshing epic of American boyhood will be welcome to audiences of grown ups as well as young people.
